I heard about Desmond Tutu a while ago and I was aware that he had played a key role in opposing apartheid in South Africa. But very recently I came across another article on him. After reading the article I got to know him a little better as a person and decided to share a few inspiring words about him today.
He played a key role in fighting for the oppressed and the victims of injustice in South Africa in the 1980s. He’s also the first black Anglican bishop of Johannesburg. Currently, he’s an active social activist. Last year he came to Bangalore for his annual visit to Soukya holistic health center and during his stay he didn’t fail to capture the hearts of Bangloreans.
To many he comes across as a warm and down to earth human being. He does not believe in social barriers and prejudices. He’s a great admirer of Nelson Mandela. He stated that Nelson Mandela is a ‘God’s gift’ to human mankind. He also holds the Pope in high regards. The Pope’s down to earth ways and simplicity towards life is what captivates him the most.
He fought against racism and now he raises his voice for Gay human rights. He’s saddened by corruption, violence and rapes against women.
Life hasn’t been a cake walk for him. He’s been a victim of racial discrimination. He’s had his share of trials, challenges and humiliations. But being a man of integrity and strength he used these difficult times as stepping stones to turn his life around for the better and in turn his actions proved favorable for the people of South Africa.
He recollects a time when he was young, seven years to be precise when he went to a shop along with his father. The shop assistant addressed his father as ‘ boy ‘. Seeing his father being degraded was one of the saddest moments in his life. Bad experiences such as these pushed him further to fight injustice and oppression.
His daily routine proves that he’s a very disciplined man. A trait of all successful people. He reads the Bible regularly and he’s a family oriented person. He’s very close to his wife Leah. He wakes up at 4 am in the morning and spends some time in silence. He then goes for a brisk half an hour walk. He returns and performs some stretching exercises. After breakfast, he heads to office only to return at 6 pm in the evening.
I was happy to read so much about this great personality. A simple person with noble ideas. So that was a crisp and brief description of Desmond Tutu. I’m sure all the Bangloreans were inspired by him and would love to have him back soon.
Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness ~ Desmond Tutu
