All You Needed to Know About Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE)


GATE or Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, one of the most competitive exams in India is conducted once a year, especially in the month of February, for admission into post graduate courses across institutes in India. The exam is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Sciences and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the national coordination board- GATE, department of higher education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD).

Over the years, GATE has gained recognition as a tough exam, that is cleared by only the brightest and brilliant students of India. Only 15% of the appearing students qualify.The duration of the exam is three hours and it tests the engineering basics of the students. The exam is conducted online via a computer based test and the student needs to obtain high percentile to get admission in post graduate programs in Indian institute of technology and Indian institute of Science. The GATE exam was first held in 1984.

The GATE scores is used to attain admission in post graduate courses in institutes with financial aid provided by the government.The scores in this exam is also used for various job openings by public sector undertakings.The exam has gained recognition internationally as well.

Various Disciplines

GATE is conducted in 23 disciplines like aerospace engineering, agricultural engineering, architecture and planning, biotechnology, civil engineering, Chemistry, Chemical engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Mining engineering and so on.

In the test, each subject contains ten questions that tests the general aptitude (language and analytical skills) and the core subject.

 GATE Results

GATE Results are usually announced one month after the examinations are over. The date announced for the declaration of the result is March 27, 2017 at 06:00 p.m.

The application for GATE 2017, has already been opened from 1 September 2017.The last date for the GATE registration process is October 4, 2016.

However, before registering for the exam, one needs to assess their own eligibility criteria. The basic eligibility criteria is

  1. Passed a Bachelor’s degree (4 years after 10+2 or 3 years after diploma) in any stream. You are also eligible if you are in the final year.
  2. Passed a master’s degree in any branch like Mathematics,Science,Statistics and computer applications or equivalent degree.(Pre final year students are not eligible to write the exam)
